Description:
Turn Left onto Old Wishaw Road. This old turnpike road is now a quiet pathway and leads back to Luggie Road which you cross, with care, before heading back to Carluke town centre and the starting point at the Train Station.
Further Info:
Old Wishaw Road was once the main road from Glasgow to Carlisle. It becomes the Old Lanark Road after the High Street and goes down over the Old Bridgend. The “new” road i.e. what we call the main road was built in 1823 as part of the Glasgow to Carlisle Turnpike. There are some studies which suggest this section may follow the course of another Roman Road. This area was covered in greenhouses growing tomatoes and flowers for the Glasgow market.
